Hampsfell is truly tiny – this limestone hill sits just 728ft (222m) above sea level. Yet it provides some breathtaking views out across the vast expanse of Morecambe Bay. To the north, the Lake District fells beckon while the eastern horizon is filled by the Pennine chain. Its most unusual feature is the the ‘hospice’ on its summit. Panels inside this strange Victorian shelter invite travellers to rest and “not by acts of wanton mischief and destruction show that they possess more muscle than brain”, while the roof has a viewfinder on it.
Hampsfell is most commonly approached from Grange-over-Sands but there are also paths up from Cartmel.
